Career Management It is your job to take charge and drive your own career. The first step is to always keep your professional network strong and be open to having conversations about other opportunities, especially when you are “on top of your game”, even if you are not actively looking for a change, it can’t hurt to be aware of your value in the market. Whatever your reason(s) for considering a career change of any kind, be sure to create a list of the most important aspects of your job search and rank them. When working with us, it is in your own best interest to be forthcoming with this information, so that we can determine the most appropriate opportunities for you. If you are considering a move and would like to partner with us to help you, here are a few things that we will need to know about you and why:
Active or Passive Search If you are out of work or something is driving you to look outside of your current organization, you are in an “active” search. If you doing well but would like to keep the door open to better opportunities, you are in a passive search.
Motivation This is probably the single most important thing that we, as recruiters, need to know when we are working with a person who is considering a change in employment. Your motivation, or “what is driving your decision to look” outside your current company, should be crystal clear to you before engaging in the interview process. It is in your own best interest to be forthcoming with your true motivation so that we can determine the most appropriate opportunities for you! Below are a few questions to help you determine your true motivation:
- Is your company unstable?
- Have you been overlooked for promotions?
- Is someone holding you back?
- Have you been in your job too long/stagnant?
- Are you frustrated by company politics?
- Have you hit a plateau?
- Are you bored, need a new challenge?
- Do you need to expand your skill set?
- Are you working in a company culture that suits your personal style?
- Do you feel valued?
- Are you overworked?
- Are you underpaid?
- Is your travel schedule unbearable?
- Is your work/life balance off?
- Do you have a personality conflict that cannot be resolved?
- Have you lost passion for your company/brand?
- Are there ethical differences that cannot be resolved?
- Are you tired of relocating with your company?
- Would you prefer to live in a different location?
Compensation Being candid with us regarding your accurate compensation is critical when it comes to negotiation. It is best to separate into: base salary, bonus or commission, company car or car allowance, other incentives like: stock, equity, long-term incentives, vacation time, etc.
Passions Understanding more about your personal interests and goals will help us determine the types of companies that we should be targeting for you.
Company Culture Being proactive about the type of company that will suit your personal style is always best, we know companies and how to determine if the “fit” will suit your goals.
Personal Life Sharing information about your personal life, life-stage, and/or family dynamics is welcome. We use this information to understand you as a person, not just a candidate. This information can also help us determine if your specific wants/needs for work/life balance, travel, and ability to relocate will align with our clients long-term goals as well.
